Press Briefing for Grand Opening
Local MP to open Ashlyns Food Hub to improve School Meals

The Rt. Hon. Eric Pickles, MP for Brentwood and Ongar, will be cutting
the ribbon on Ashlyns’ new Food Hub in High Laver, near Ongar on 17th
June.

The Hub reflects the success of the “Feeding our Future” project,
launched in 2004, which was borne out of a
desire to have school meals cooked in
all schools using fresh local ingredients, prepared by a confident well
motivated catering team and enjoyed by children from all walks of life whilst
gaining an understanding of where their food has come from and how it was
produced.

Ashlyns remains committed to supplying local produce to schools from its
suppliers based throughout Essex, Suffolk and Norfolk. It provides catering
consultancy and partnerships to schools, hospitals, funded projects and private
sector organisations.

The project continues to be at the forefront of the school meals
revolution and the Food Hub will provide a bespoke facility to match that
success.

Ashlyns, in partnership with the Rural Community Council of Essex, was granted funding from
the Big Lottery Fund in 2009 to run its “Can Cook Will Cook” project, from its
Training Kitchen in High Laver. It works with children and their
carers from
disadvantaged backgrounds throughout Essex and North London,
aiming to develop their skills in cookery, nutrition, numeracy and literacy.
.
The Training Kitchen was originally opened by Jamie Oliver in 2005, and was built primarily
to help school dinner ladies enhance their skills and increase their understanding
of healthy meals.

The Grand Opening of the Food Hub will be an opportunity to see the
business and its projects in operation, meet the team, local and Government
officials, and others from the education and farming sectors.
