Overview
An exciting opportunity has risen to join Newhall Primary Academy and Nursery in Harlow. Opened in 2018, Newhall is a brand-new, state of the art academy on the Newhall development in Harlow, with a capacity for 420 children in school. The Primary Academy currently has approximately 240 children in years R-3. It will then grow year-on-year until it reaches full capacity estimated to complete in 2024. The adjoining nursery has a capacity for up to 56 children.

About the role
You will be working for an award-winning contract caterer (Ashlyns) with a reputation for innovation and a background built on strong ethics and an ongoing commitment to improving school meals in a modern, newly equipped kitchen. You will:
manage and develop a small team, and work closely with the school, ensuring that the children are offered imaginative, appealing and nutritious meals
set and maintain the highest standards in food hygiene and health and safety
be responsible for all administration associated with ordering food and sundries, stock control, meal uptake, staff timesheets and attendance
ensure staff have induction and ongoing training necessary for the safe performance of their roles
support the school’s ethos of healthy eating, particularly as the numbers on roll grow, through a variety of promotion events and marketing activities
be fully hands on with; preparation, cooking, tasting and delivering the meals with service participation at lunch time, and working with the team to efficiently clear away
the school also requires ‘tea’ for after school club, and additional ‘snacks’ need to be prepared for the nursery throughout the day at pre-arranged times
What we’re looking for:
You will be able to demonstrate skills in management, budget control, service improvement, customer relations and marketing. Equally as important, you must have accomplished craft skills, confident in your abilities, and able to demonstrate them for the benefit of your team – you will be expected to undertake a practical test if you are shortlisted.
In brief, you will have:
a solid background in catering within a commercial environment and, ideally, in an educational setting
experience of managing a team
a sound and up to date knowledge of food safety procedures and hold a Level 2 certificate as a minimum, prepared to train immediately to Level 3
an understanding of nutrition and, ideally, knowledge of government food standards for school meals
a genuine interest and a desire to challenge perceptions of school meals
excellent communication skills, with the ability to deal with children, parents, school staff and colleagues confidently and successfully
Candidates must be prepared to obtain an enhanced DBS (formerly CRB) disclosure which is satisfactory to both Ashlyns and the school and be rechecked throughout their employment. All other safe guarding conditions including clearances for satisfactory references, medicals and right of work in the UK must be obtained
