General Kitchen Assistant/Assistant Cook

Ashlyns, in partnership with St Johns RC School, Woodford

is seeking a General Kitchen Assistant/Assistant Cook

25 hours per week

09:00 to 14:00

Monday to Friday, Term Time only


You will work closely with both your Catering Manager and the Head Teacher as part of a small team, to serve fresh, interesting and nutritious school meals within budget which meet Government, Ashlyns’ and the School’s standards.


Duties will include:


Food Preparation - preparing fresh food on a seasonal 3-week menu cycle, ensuring full adherence to recipes, food presentation standards and portion control; understanding the needs of pupils with special dietary requirements; working to deadlines to ensure meals are served on time.


Administration - assisting in the administrative tasks associated with ordering food and sundries, including checking delivery notes and invoices and assisting in the monthly stock take.


Management – deputising for the Catering Manager as and when necessary and supervising other kitchen staff as and when directed by the Catering Manager.


Health & Safety - supporting the Catering Manager in ensuring that policies and procedures with regard to health, safety and hygiene are adhered to and cleaning schedules are carried out.


You will have:

  • a background in catering within a commercial environment and, ideally, in an educational setting and possess sound craft skills

  • knowledge of food safety and health and safety procedures

  • hold at least a Level 2 Food Hygiene Certificate

  • an understanding of nutrition and, ideally, knowledge of government food standards for school meals

  • good communication skills, with the ability to deal with children, parents, school staff and colleagues confidently and professionally

  • an ability to work as part of a team, under pressure, to meet deadlines

  • an ability and willingness to “act up” in the absence of the Catering Manager

Candidates will receive appropriate on-the-job training and ongoing support during their induction and probationary period to ensure they are able to fulfil the entire needs of the role, specifically in relation to deputising for the Catering Manager.


Candidates must be prepared to obtain an enhanced DBS disclosure which is satisfactory to both Ashlyns and the school and be rechecked throughout their employment. All other safeguarding conditions including clearances for satisfactory references, medicals and right of work in the UK must be obtained.
